During this spoon carving course you will be guided through how to carve a spoon from green wood.

The course starts with an initial safety briefing, where our instructors will demonstrate and guide you through how to safely handle and use the various tools you’ll be using throughout the course.Spoon sketched out

Our instructors will take you through how to carve useful items from greenwood, such as spoons, spatulas and ladles. You will be taken through how to harvest various types of wood, in order to first make a maul. This will help you to get used to the different carving techniques required to carve a spoon using green wood. The first task will be to carve a maul which will help grasps the basics of using a knife and saw. Once you’ve completed your maul, our instructors will demonstrate and guide you through how to carve a spatula.

Spoon blank with toolsAfter lunch it’s straight into carving a spoon or ladle. You will be using the maul you made earlier to help split your piece of wood. Once split our instructors will guide you through how to carve down the initial shape of the spoon, removing vast amounts of material using just a knife. Once you are happy with the size and shape of your spoon, you will be handed a crook knife by our instructors, who will demonstrate how to use this tool efficiently to carve out the bowl of the spoon. There may also be time to give your spoon an initial sanding before testing how well it works.

There will be a selection of woodworking tools available for your to use throughout the course, these will include, axes, froes, carving knives, crook knife (for carving the bowl of your spoon), gouges. Our instructor will also take you through how to finish off your spoon through the sanding process and protecting it with food safe oils as well as how to sharpen your knives keeping them in tip top condition.

  • Carve a maul form a single piece of wood
  • Carve a spatula from a spilt piece of wood
  • Carve a spoon using various techniques
  • Finish off your spoon & spatula by sanding and oiling
  • Keep you tools sharp

This course will run over 1 day starting at 9am and finishing at 4pm.

Location: This course is held at our Wiltshire site close Swindon.

All meals for this course will be provided, allowing each student the opportunity to do some bushcraft cooking over an open fire. We have a kettle always on the go so you can help yourself to tea, coffee, squash and biscuits. We also have fresh drinking water and a fruit bowl available.


This course starts at 9am and finishes at 4pm.
