Our instructors will demonstrate safe handling and cutting techniques used in bushcraft. You’ll then move onto shelter building, where our instructors will guide you through various types of shelters ranging from a 1 man to a group shelter and what to look out for when selecting a spot to construct your shelter – these include hazards to be aware of and using nature to aid you. You will then go onto construct your own weatherproof leaf litter shelter from the natural resources you have around you.

Our instructors will be on hand to give you useful hints and tips in building your shelters and are more than happy to get stuck in as well.

Once your shelter is complete you will head on back to basecamp, where after a quick brew it’s onto game preparation. Our instructors will demonstrate and help you prepare this wild fowl ready for cooking over the open fire, for your woodland lunch. After lunch, we will take a gentle stroll through the woods looking at various trees and plants which can be used for food or medicine alongside their general uses in bushcraft. This is an ideal time to collect some bark and fungi ready for fire lighting later in the day.

We finish the afternoon with a session on fire lighting. Our instructors will teach you the fundamentals of fire lighting, starting with collecting the initial tinder, moving on to various firewood stages and finally methods to start your fire. Your first task will be to clear the ground making sure you have a safe area to ignite you fire. You will then get a chance to experiment with various types of natural and man made tinders and discover which methods of ignition are most suited to the types of tinder you have selected. During the session you will be able to have a go at igniting your fire using, solar with a parabolic mirror, a modern firesteel and the traditional bow drill (fire by friction).Bushcraft Essentials - Bow drill session (fire lighting)
